Mythology (Eyewitness Books (Library))
Published in Library Binding by Knopf (June, 1999)
Authors: Neil Philip, Neil Phillip, and Alfred A Knopf Publishing
Average review score:

Truly a mini-museum between the covers of a book
The L.A. Times Book Review said the Eyewitness Books series is "Like a mini-museum between the covers of a book" and that is certainly the perfect description. When you leaf through "Mythology" and see all the color photographs of artifacts and artwork, you will see that this book is a short course in Comparative Mythology, rather than just Classical Mythology. The book approaches the concept of mythology as "religion in story form," and Neil Philip's book is structured by concepts rather than cultures. Each of the two-dozen two-page spreads is devoted to such things as the creation of the world, making humankind, floods and storms, the elements, ancestor worship, superheroes, gods of war, mythical beasts and sacred sites. "Mythology" accounts for dozens of cultures, from the Aborigines of Australia to the Native American Zuni people. I do not know if students today still bother to draw things for their reports or if they just download photographs from the Internet, but "Mythology" is the sort of book where you will find something to draw for any report on any aspect of mythology you have to do for school. These items are taken from literally dozens of major museums around the world and you are pretty much guaranteed to see lots of fascinating objects you have never seen before. Usually students become interested in mythology through the study of the myths of the ancient Greeks. "Mythology" will get them interested in the myths of other cultures as well. Besides, it is fun just to look at the pictures.

Natural by Design: Beauty and Balance in Southwest Gardens
Published in Paperback by Museum of New Mexico Pr (April, 1995)
Author: Judith Phillips
Average review score:

from a new mexico gardener...
Of the many books I've read on southwest gardening, this was the most rewarding. I learned so much about native and adaptive plants that are suited to our climate and growing conditions here in the southwest. Also about the different "microclimates" that determine proper location of particular plants in the garden so they will thrive. After applying the valuable information from this book to my own gardening efforts I see miraculous results! This book is a MUST for New Mexico gardeners interested in beautiful, water conservative plants.

Network Models in Optimization and Their Applications in Practice
Published in Hardcover by Wiley-Interscience (30 June, 1992)
Authors: Fred Glover, Darwin Klingman, and Nancy V. Phillips
Average review score:

A practical, how-to tutorial on network flow modeling
This is the only book I have encountered that is devoted exclusively to the design of network optimization models. Written in a tutorial style, starting with the fundamentals, and illustrated with an enormous number of examples, it shows in great detail how to build network flow models for real decision problems. Although solution algorithms are not covered, per se, the user learns to build models for optimizing a wide range of decision situations, from production and logistics systems to personnel and portfolio planning. There is plenty of software around to implement the formulations described. I have used this book in conjunction with my network optimization course, and the modeling exercises (at the end of each chapter) are the student's favorite part of this otherwise-algorithm-oriented course. While the general reader is not given the solution to the exercises (a solution manual is available to adopting instructors), this does not take away from the enjoyment and insight gleaned by the reader of this highly accessible guide.

Neutron Cross Sections
Published in Textbook Binding by Academic Press (August, 1988)
Authors: Victoria McLane, Charles Dunford, and Phillip Rose
Average review score:

The most complete neutron cross sections review
This book has the most complete compilation of neutron total cross sections presently available. It would be advisable that the world wide neutron users community have it in its libraries, because it contains information that is usually out of the scope of the large Neutron Centers, and frequently forgotten

excellent reading
I loved this book. It was humorous and serious in short simple easy to read paragraphs. Everyone should read this book. It makes you feel good and helps you to examine your own life. It's great for people who want to improve their quality of life. Every chapter reminded me of myself or someone I know. I gave mine to someone who needed it, but I'm buying another for a quick reference guide, so I can throw out my st.john's wort! Excellent book, I Love this writer.

Never Lick a Moving Blender!
Published in Paperback by Howard Publishing (September, 1996)
Authors: Marvin Phillips and Kristen L. Myers
Average review score:

Yeah, it was funny, but...
...I didn't think the middle section, with the photospreads of survivors of kitchen accidents was in good taste. I was eating while I leafed through it, and almost got sick! Sliced off fingers, stab wounds, bruises, compound fractures, and so much blood - was that all really necessary?

Next time, try it without the photographs.

New Perspectives on Microsoft Windows 95 - Advanced
Published in Paperback by Course Technology (01 March, 1996)
Author: Harry Phillips
Average review score:

A Classic on two levels
Another excellent textbook from Harry Phillips. This is both a model and a reference work that I never part with.

As a corporate trainer for a company that still uses Windows 95 as it's primary PC operating system, this is an invaluable tool in providing training to new users via phone support (Help Desk) and in the classroom. I used the book as a primary reference when I worked on the help desk troubleshooting user errors or explaining the basics of the operating system. Now, as a trainer, I use the book as a model for interactive training when designing a short course on Windows 95 or 98.

The step-through exercises are excellent and so clear that my "students" are able to take off on their own, without my assistance, and learn the materials successfully. I have used the text to teach friends and co-workers the elements of the Windows 9x family of operating systems. If you are using Windows 95, but know you aren't getting the most out of what has become a fairly stable operating system, this is the book that will make you smack your forehead and exclaim "I get it!"
